Tips on reading and understanding inspection reports
Understanding your home inspection report is an important part of the buying process. Here are some tips to help you get the most from it.
- Ask about report format — when interviewing a home inspector, ask what type of report they provide
- Look for detail — a report that only indicates "Good," "Fair," or "Poor" without explanation is vague and easily misinterpreted
- Expect descriptive information — a good report should describe the condition of the site and home in detail
- Look for recommendations — narrative reports without repair recommendations can be difficult to act on
- Accompany the inspector — if possible, be present for the entire inspection
- Read it completely — take the time to understand the condition of the home you're about to purchase
